Kathleen post,

Answer the question: Do citizens have the right to break the law if the law is unjust?

Locke stated that anyone has a right to punish transgressors that go against natural law; however, people are biased (Then & Now).  He states that civil society and government need to be formed.  Instead of a monarchial reign where absolute power exists, he states instead of a society that can protect the natural law. The natural law is the right to life, health, liberty, and property.  Locke also states that government is also subservient to that law.  If the law is unjust, he states that the people are justified in overthrowing it.
In section 222 of Chapter XIX of the Dissolution of Government, Locke writes “whenever the legislators endeavour to take away, and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any farther obedience, and are left to the common refuge, which God hath provided for all men, against force and violence.“  (Locke)
This being said, there are ways to change an unjust law.  Luckily society and government seem to slowly evolve to create laws that are fair.  History has seen unjustified laws and systems be put to the test where citizens rightfully justify their power to overthrow those laws.

Hannah post,

Answer the question: In responding to this discussion topic, share three strategies you learned from the resources on either resumes or cover letters or both.

Three strategies I found helpful when reading through the resume guide are:
– sell yourself and your brand
– identify transferable skills
– Highlight your accomplishments
Selling yourself and your brand means to make your resume show the most interesting version of yourself so you can stand out above others. Second, identifying transferable skills can open your opportunities such as being a great communicator or having critical thinking skills can be desired by some employers. Lastly, highlighting your accomplishments can show an employer how you can benefit their company or organization. Wether you solve problems or have contributed solutions to businesses, all these things can come into play on your resume to make you seem more attractive to employers.

Shane post,

Answer the question:  write three pieces of advice you found from the website.

Three pieces of advice that I found from the website are:

1. The top portion of a resume is literally the calling card of the applicant. It provides all contact information and some eye-catching information such as unique qualifications in training that the applicant possesses that may set them apart from others.
2. In the portion of the resume that lists professional experience it should be clear and concise. Bulletized format and not going overboard with description but using professional keywords used in that industry that catch the eye will help the reader scan more quickly.
3. One section I did not know should be there but makes complete sense to me is a continuing education section of the resume. Listing your continuing education shows the employer that you’re not closed off to learning new things and I do know that in industry, certifications require re-certifying and there’s always new ways of doing things that employers covet because it brings innovation to their office.
